Our Services
Sleep Dentistry/ SedationYour comfort and relaxation are extremely important to us. We want to make sure you feel safe, cared for, and that you’re in the best hands. For patients with dental anxiety or those undergoing complex procedures, the traditional dental visit can be daunting.
Sleep dentistry, facilitated by techniques such as nitrous oxide sedation, oral sedation, and IV sedation, has revolutionized the dental experience for countless patients worldwide. Whether it’s the gentle euphoria of nitrous oxide or the deeper relaxation of IV sedation, these techniques offer patients a stress-free dental visit, ensuring a positive and comfortable experience for every patient.
We now offer two types of Sleep Dentistry through Sleep Dentistry Services to ensure your visit to our dental clinic based in Thornhill Park is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
We provide both General Anaesthesia (GA)—where you are completely asleep throughout the procedure—and Twilight Sedation (IV sedation), which keeps you conscious but deeply relaxed with little to no memory of the treatment.
These safe and effective options are ideal for patients with dental anxiety, complex treatment needs, or those simply looking for a more comfortable experience.
Types of Sedation
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Commonly known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide sedation has been a staple in dental practices for decades. This odorless gas is administered through a small mask placed over the patient’s nose. As the patient breathes normally, the nitrous oxide induces a state of relaxation and euphoria, effectively reducing anxiety and discomfort during dental procedures.
One of the key benefits of nitrous oxide sedation is its rapid onset and offset. Within minutes of inhaling the gas, patients experience a calming effect, allowing the dental team to proceed with the treatment comfortably. Once the procedure is complete, the gas is discontinued, and patients quickly return to their normal state without lingering drowsiness or side effects.
Additionally, nitrous oxide sedation is considered safe for both children and adults, making it a versatile option for patients of all ages. Its titratable nature allows dentists to adjust the level of sedation according to the individual’s needs, ensuring optimal comfort throughout the treatment process.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation involves the use of medication taken orally to induce a relaxed and drowsy state during dental procedures. Typically administered in the form of a pill, these medications belong to the benzodiazepine family, such as diazepam or lorazepam. Patients are usually instructed to take the prescribed dose before their appointment, allowing ample time for the medication to take effect.
One of the primary benefits of oral sedation is its convenience and ease of administration. Oral sedation is particularly beneficial for individuals with moderate to severe dental anxiety or those undergoing more complex treatments.
IV Sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation is another popular method employed in sleep dentistry, particularly for individuals undergoing more extensive dental procedures or those with severe anxiety. Unlike nitrous oxide, which is inhaled, IV sedation involves the administration of sedative medications directly into the bloodstream via a vein in the arm or hand under the care of an anaesthetist.
One of the primary advantages of IV sedation is its ability to induce a deeper level of sedation compared to nitrous oxide. Patients under IV sedation often experience a profound sense of relaxation and may even drift into a semi-conscious or twilight state during the procedure. This deeper level of sedation is particularly beneficial for patients undergoing lengthy or invasive treatments, as it helps alleviate both physical and psychological discomfort. Furthermore, IV sedation allows for precise control over the level of sedation throughout the procedure, ensuring the patient’s safety and comfort at all times.
